Founded in 1939 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field (California) has played a pivotal role in shaping modern aeronautics and space exploration. Originally established as an aeronautical laboratory, Ames became part of NASA when the agency was formed in 1958. Since then, it has contributed to nearly every major NASA mission, applying its expertise in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, intelligent systems, and thermal protection. From improving commercial air travel to supporting robotic exploration of other worlds, Ames has remained at the forefront of aerospace innovation.
Located in the heart of Silicon Valley—just 40 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles north of San Jose—Ames benefits from close proximity to world-class universities and cutting-edge aerospace companies. The center is home to some of NASA’s most advanced research infrastructure, including the world’s largest wind tunnel, arc jet complexes for testing heat shield materials, high-fidelity flight simulators, and NASA’s most powerful supercomputer. With more than 2,500 employees, Ames is a leader in research across multiple domains including space, Earth, lunar, and biological sciences. It also plays a central role in advancing small spacecraft missions, autonomous systems, and high-performance technologies critical to NASA’s future exploration goals.
